Babies and 'I like children'

chapters in Things pondered

Breastfeeding

When I saw Breastfeeding for dummies and another book in the library, I wondered if there is so much to fill books on it. I do find breastfeeding soothing solutions article helpful in getting an idea of things involved. In the child care class, the instructor did tell that the bacteria could go into the bottle but I didnt know that a breastfeeding mom could be prone to it too. I caught the words hind milk in the class but did not know of its importance in baby's weight gain until I filled a quiz on nursing.

Child care class

A video on child care was running on the tv when we walked in early to the class. It was all about the cues to look for when the baby is hungry, playful, overstimulated.
Rooting in infants.
We learnt diapering, swaddling.
The instructor asked us to put a hand on the baby if we are stretching to find things for bathing, so that baby does not flip her/his self to the floor.
While listening to how to wipe the eyes off, while giving the bath, the thing about not to use the same piece for both the eyes is so common sense, so just that hopefully helps all the parents through.

Jennifer Cooke suggests putting a small marshmallow in the icecream cone, so it doesnt drip.

Co-ed or not?

We live in a world of both the sexes, so why shouldnt the learning be in such an environment.

Michael Gurian, an educator shows the structural differences in the brains of girls and boys and the implications of it on their learning in Boys and girls learn differently.

Beating Tantrums

In Jacqueline Burt's article, 7 easy ways to fix bad behavior, I liked the 'Validate before Disciplining' approach. The author says that according to Gary Unruh kids act out for a reason. I remember a time I threw bread slices onto the floor complaining that my mom was favoring my sis and bro. At that time, I could count, so it would be easy to see if my allegation was true. I wonder what was my reason.
Catherine hickem, author of Regret free parenting believes that motherhood is not just about raising the child right but also the growth of mother herself.

What can go into a kids mouth?

When I first read of frozen watercolours, I wondered how can you stop the kids at popping those colourful cool things into their mouth? Here's the answer. These World's Coolest Watercolors are edible.
Yesterday I saw an yr old kid chew on his bib. Mentally, I was stopping him from chewing it. Then the mom told me that he was teething.

Easy to say no

We are always reading about 'how to say no' as adults when you are in a situation where you cant get yourself to. Kids these days seem to have no problem saying no. A parent said that the reason for it is the constant 'noing' that they get from the parents warnign them before they can do what they like to. katy rank lev talks reminds the parents that 'we're too nefative' in her discipline mistakes all moms make. It is going to be a great language exercise if we have to say every 'no' sentence of ours to reflect what to do than what not to.
In the elbulli kitchen, you should not run. How would you say that to the stagiaires?
'We only walk in the kitchen, so that we dont spill stuff?'.

The verts

Bringing out the best in your child, an article by Jennifer Graham Kizer is an excellent article on your tiny tots, their different behavior and expectations based on their being extrovert or introvert. A bonus is the subsection on how the parent-child behavior pans out based on the parent and child being of the opposite kind of the verts.
She quotes authors of The Self aware parent and The introvert advanatge.

A 3yr old kid going home after a birthday party was upset that the parents were not taking home the big present they brought along with them.

Sound of adults

A nose clearing from the bathroom. Its the husband.
The last I heard of an adult do that in the house is my father.

To pee or not

A kid approached his mom in a telling look which meant that he has to pee. He has been potty trained.
"Its ok. You are in a diaper".
Isnt it confusing for the child to respond differently to the nature's call depending on  where they are at that time.

Learning words

At the doctors hospital, a little girl had magazines around her, in her lap. She even held one rightside up.
It was her parents turn to meet the doctor.
"Put them back".
"back".
And thats how kids pick words. Repeat what they hear and thus increase their vocabulary.
